The Truth about Stretch Marks

What is a stretch mark?

A term that refers to the scars on your skin is Stretch marks (or Striae Gravidarum) which occurs due to damage to the elastic fibers that help skin stretch. Stretch marks are perfectly normal, and most women - and even some men - have them!

How do the stretch marks appear?

It depends upon the skin color; stretch marks start out as pink, reddish brown, brown, or very dark brown streaks. With passing of the time they get fade to a more silvery color that is lighter than your other skin.

Where do they normally appear on your body?

The stretch marks can appear anywhere on your body, but are most common on hips, breasts and buttocks.

How is it possible to avoid stretch marks?

It is only a matter of genetics whether you get them or not, that is, how elastic your skin is. There is nothing you can do, so not to worry about it either way!

Does cream help?

There are women who use different types of creams, oils and lotions to try to prevent stretch marks from forming. Unfortunately, these products soften and soothe the skin, no medical evidence are there to prove that they actually work! Take care of advertisers who are trying to sell you expensive products claiming that they prevent stretch marks!

This said some new medical research is there which shows that some specific creams may be able to help the appearance of stretch marks. Apparently, using Tretinoin cream (commonly known by the trade name Retin-A) 0.1 percent on stretch marks will slightly reduce the length and width of stretch marks.

(N.B. As this is a new development, during pregnancy or breast feeding Tretinoin should not be used).

Laser Therapy

The appearance of stretch marks can get improve through Laser therapy too. This could be where a surgeon uses different types of lasers, depending on the color of the stretch marks. Traditionally, one type reduces the color of dark stretch marks; the production of production of pigment-making cells is stimulated by others in already faded stretch marks. Even newer type of laser therapy is there that can also be supportive for the body in producing collagen to help restor the elasticity of the skin in depressed stretch marks. This is a very serious and expensive route to follow. It is needed that you talk your decision through fully with a skin specialist before making a final decision.
